Jorge Martínez

1920-1997

He was born in Mexico City in 1920. He lived, from 1928 to 1931 at San Antonio Texas, where he studied the first elementary school grades. In Mexico he studied Elementary and Hisghschool. Then he studied to became a Lawyer at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

In 1942 he participated with the Teatro Universitario directed by Hernando Wagner and Enrique Ruelas. He worked with them during thirty five stage plays under the direction of Wagner, José de Jesús Aceves, Ignacio Retes, Xavier Rojas, Rodolfo Usigli, Seki Sano, Salvador Novo and others.

He lived at Paris for a short time, thanks to a scholarship awarded by the Teatro Caracol.

He got married in 1965 with the great actress Alicia Caro, she has been as well main character in Mexican movie. They lived together until the death of the actor in 1997.

During his career Jorge Martínez de Hoyos atended several film festivals in: Cartagena, Colombia; Kaslov and Vasy, Czechoslovakia; Moscow, Russia; among others. He also represented Mexican movie in Colombia, Venezuela, Perú, Chile, Argentina and Puerto Rico.

Along his career he received his first Ariel as the best male character in the film Sombra verde (1954) and the second Ariel, at the same category at the film Canasta de cuentos mexicanos (1956). He received two Diosas de Plata, the first in 1966 and the second in 1978 for the best male character in Divinas Palabras. For Valentín de la sierra (1968), he received the Prize Mérito Cinematográfico. In 1966 he received the Onix for La trinchera film. He also received three Heraldos all along his career. In 1983 he won two prizes as best actor of the Mexican television thanks to his role as Don Benito at the soap opera Gabriel y Gabriela. And in 1993 he won the prize as best first actor of the soap opera El abuelo y yo.

The name of this extraordinary actor is written with golden letters in the history of cinema, theater and Mexican television.
